Well, if you are charged with "overkill" for using a 10mm to defend yourself, what would they do if you shot someone with a 12ga shotgun with 00 buckshot? That is FAR more devastating than a 10mm handgun round. Yes, a 10mm is a potent round, for a handgun, but unless you had a shitty lawyer, if you had a stock 10mm vs a .45 (even +P) vs a 9mm (even plus+), it should make no difference in terms of the simple question, "Did you fear for your life" and use your legal firearm of choice to dispatch the threat lawfully. I like you guys and agree with a lot of what you say, but turning a 10mm handgun into some implement of total destruction is just not being honest. Again...any attorney can make a case for or against anything, especially in a deadly force case, but like I said...if you are charged for unreasonable use of force for using a 10mm to defend your life makes no sense when there are far more powerful firearms you could use to kill someone with, again, using a shotgun or a rifle as a means of self defense as an example, and many, many people keep a 12ga shotgun strictly for home defense. In fact, if I could have only one gun to use and or modify for such purposes, it would be a 12ga pump gun that I could use a variety of barrels/loads/accessories for. In general, in the gun world, many purists simply look at a handgun as a means of getting to a "real gun", AKA, a long gun, in the event of a real, legit firefight. And because of the huge disparity between the power and effectiveness of a handgun versus a long gun, there is and will always be arguments made for and against certain handgun cartridges being "the alpha and omega" and others being "worthless". For example, many, many purists prefer a 1911 style .45 for its stopping power and simple but effective platform. Having said that, I'd take a .45 in a Glock, simply because they are known for their functionality/reliability. A lot of people don't prefer 10mm due to high cost of ammo, heavy recoil, and in the early days of the 10mm, malfunctions due to high pressure loads literally cracking frames, etc. But no...a 10mm handgun is not some WMD. Here are a few HG calibers that are more potent than the 10mm...

DeleteI completely agree with you… there should be no limit on self defense, and a shotgun is often the gun of choice for home defense, for good reason.
The story I told was something I heard and wanted to share with JFK… it was NOT my opinion, it was someone else’s story about a lawsuit which resulted in a man being charged for using a 10mm Glock for self defense, it was somehow considered overkill… I agree with you, such a legal charge is complete bull.
Below are two videos I listened to at the time… the first video is the legal story… the guy telling the story DOES NOT agree, and the story he tells is something he’s repeating.. it seems unconfirmed, and unclear.
In the second video TheYankeeMarshal mentions the same legal story (I’m guessing) and he says the gun owner spent 3 years in jail before the decision was overturned.
Long story short, I shouldn’t have even brought it up since it’s a rare case.
